He was born Sept. 4, 1926, in Grand Island to Theodore and Alice (Wagner) Niess Sr. He moved to Omaha and was a graduate of Central High School in Omaha. Niess Jr., 83, of Fremont passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2010, in Fremont. He was born Sept. 4, 1926, in Grand Island to Theodore and Alice (Wagner) Niess Sr. He moved to Omaha and was a graduate of Central High School in Omaha. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from June 15, 1944, to Nov. 25, 1946, and was stationed in the Philippines. He came to Fremont after his discharge. He was employed at Hormel & Company in Fremont retired in 1987. Ted married Betty Morton on Feb. 1, 1948, at First United Methodist Church in Fremont. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the honor guard. He was a life member of American Legion Post 20, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 854 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles 200, all of Fremont. He had previously been a volunteer fireman for Fremont. He was appointed Admiral in the Great Navy of the State of Nebraska by then Gov. Mike Johanns. Ted loved Nebraska football. Survivors include: his wife, Betty; sons, Ted (and wife, Debi) Niess of Omaha and Neal Niess of Fremont; daughters, Beth Richardson and Rona (and husband, Dick) Shuster, all of Fremont; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and four sisters. The funeral will be 9:30 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Fremont with the Rev. Greg Hall officiating. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. today at the church with the family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time Friday at the church. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery in Fremont with military graveside services conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of VFW Post 854 and American Legion Post 20. Memorials have been established to First United Methodist Church and the Disabled American Veterans.
