He worked as a farm hand for Ray De Haan for 15 years and worked at Vermeers for almost 20 years, retiring in 1973 due to his health He is survived by his wife, Gertrude, also being cared for at the Siesta Park Nursing Home; two daughters - Mrs Edward (Minnie) Uitermarkt and Mrs. Marvin (Delores) Spoelstra, both from Pella; •four grandchildren - Jerry Uitermarkt and his wife Martha, Des Moines; and Kevin, Lisa and Kurtis Spoelstra; a sister - Mrs. Arnold (Marie) Mathes,Pella; and a brother - Walter Van Dorland, Eddyville. He is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters -Mary and Elizabeth, and a brother, Theodore He was a member of the Trinity Reformed Church in Pella at the time of his death. Funeral services were conducted Monday, Sept. 22 at the Van Dyk-Duven Chapel in Pella with Rev. William C. De Jong officiating. Casket bearers were Willem Castel, Gary Brouwer, Larry Mathes, Lloyd Vander Veer, Carl Mitchel and Don DeZwarte. Interment was in the Peoria Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of the Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella.
