(Schreppler) Adams AGE: 99 • Newark Theresa C. (Schreppler) Adams, age 99, of Newark, DE, died of health complications related to dementia on Thursday, September 28, 2017. Born in Wilmington, DE on September 1, 1918, Theresa was the daughter of the late George B. Schreppler, Sr. and Julia Catherine Paulman. She graduated from the newly built Christ Our King School in 1932 and was a member of the Middletown High School graduating class of 1936. She received her Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Delaware in 1940, where she was elected to May Court and later, May Queen, served as the president of her junior and senior class, played both basketball and field hockey, and was an active member of the debate team and the E52 Players. She later completed additional coursework at Duke University. She met her husband, Leon W. Adams, at the University of Delaware and they were married on July 3, 1943 in Belleville, IL near Scott Field, where Leon was serving in the U.S. Army during WWII. From 1945 until 1959, Theresa alongside her husband, Leon W. Adams, owned and operated Sussex Hardware in Seaford. In 1960, the couple built a home in Newark, where Leon established the independent insurance firm of Leon W. Adams Agency, Inc. An elementary school teacher for 20 years, Theresa taught in both the Seaford and Newark Public School Districts. For her second career, 1971-1993, she returned to school to become an insurance agent and manage one of the agency's 3 offices. She was an active volunteer for the University of Delaware Alumni Association. Theresa had a lifelong interest in American decorative arts, volunteering at Winterthur. She was a gifted gardener, a proficient needlewoman, a founding member of the "Dow Janes," and a member of several theatre and bridge groups. Additionally, Theresa was a member of the Seaford Golf & CC and the Newark CC. A seasoned traveller, she and Leon visited nearly every country in Europe, and traversed throughout the United States, China, Canada, and Central America. In addition to her parents, Theresa was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 66 years, Leon; siblings, George B. Schreppler, Jr., Louise Schreppler, Charles Schreppler, and Catherine Schreppler Collins. She is survived by her son, Leon William Adams, Jr. of Elkton, MD; her daughter, Theresa Catherine Adams Masek and her husband, Edward A. Masek, Jr. of Severna Park, MD; grandchildren, Edward (Ned) Adams Masek, Sarah Ross Masek, Afton Elizabeth Adams Smith and her husband, Dwayne; and 17 nieces and nephews. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:00 am until 11:00 am on Thursday morning, October 12, 2017, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE. A memorial service will follow at 11:30 am at the St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 276 S. College Avenue, Newark, DE 19711. Interment will be held privately in Bloomery Cemetery, Federalsburg, MD.
