She was 61 years old. She had been ill for two weeks prior to her death. Thirteen days before her death, she was stricken with paralysis on her right side which caused her death. She was 61 years old. She had been ill for two weeks prior to her death. Thirteen days before her death, she was stricken with paralysis on her right side which caused her death. Her remarkable life is truly worthy of more than a passing notice. Throughout her life she faced many trials and hardships which she bore nobly. Theresa Koller was born in Austria near the Danube River in 1810. She married before coming to the United States. After her marriage to Joseph Ortner, she became the mother of eight children, all of whom were born in Germany before coming to America in 1853. They lived in Gunskirchen near Wells in Upper Austria. Joseph and Theresa Ortner arrived in New York City in late December of 1853. They came to Stephenson County, Illinois, in 1854 and farmed in Ridott township southeast of Freeport. On January 14, 1855, their six year old daughter, Magdalena Ortner died and was buried from St. Mary's Church in Freeport. Then Mrs. Ortner's husband passed away that same year in 1855. It was a very sad thing for her to have two deaths in one year in her family. She had to work hard on her farm to support her seven remaining children. In 1856 they moved to another farm in Foreston township in Ogle County where they lived for three years. Then they moved to Carroll County, Illinois, where they farmed for five years. During the summer of 1864 they moved to Iowa. They crossed the Mississippi River at Sabula, Iowa, on a ferry boat made of logs. In August of 1864 they arrived in Barclay township of Black Hawk County, Iowa, where they began to homestead their farm. In spite of her troubles, she strove eagerly to establish a home for her family. On Thanksgiving Day, 1869, as her son Frank was going home from Waterloo in the midst of a severe snow storm, he lost his way and drove his horses and wagon into a pond near Elk Run Creek. His horses were drowned and he took a severe cold, from the effects which he became blind, and finally died on April 24, 1870, at the age of 29 years. He was born in August, 1840. One of her daughters, Mary Ortner, returned to Germany where she became married to Mr. Bretschwiezer. Her son Joseph also came to Iowa and settled in Carroll County where he spent the remainder of his life. Andrew Ortner was born March 6, 1843, in Germany and died in Barclay on June 22, 1929, having been an Iowa farmer all his life. He was 86 years old. Theresa Ortner was born August 22, 1846 in Germany. She was married to Martin Blim on January 27, 1864, at St. Mary's Church in Freeport, Illinois. She died August 8, 1931, in Waterloo and was 85 years old. Mathias Ortner died in Chicago in 1854. John Ortner was born September 9, 1851, and died July 25, 1939, age 87 years old. John was an outstanding citizen and leader of Barclay township all his life. The funeral services for Mrs. Ortner were held at St. Francis Church in Barclay on Friday, August 5, 1881, with Rev. John. N. Nemmers officiating. The attendance was very large showing in what high esteem she was held. She was a conscientious member of the Catholic Church and strove to bring her religion into her everyday life. She was always very hospitable and no one came to her home without being nvited to partake of food if they were hungry. Everyone who knew her spoke of her in terms of praise. She lies buried in St. Francis Cemetery in Barclay."
