Recorded in the chapters of early history of the Lennox community are Mr. and Mrs. George Thickett. Read More	Thirza was married to George Thickett. Thirza attained the age of 93 years and 29 days. The following is from the Lennox Diamond Jubilee Book. Recorded in the chapters of early history of the Lennox community are Mr. and Mrs. George Thickett. This pioneer couple, with their family, filed on a homestead one and one-half miles southeast of the present town site in 1876. While the family resided on their farm near here, the elderly Mr. Thickett carried on his shoemaking trade at Canton, and in 1879, when Lennox was founded with the extending of the Milwaukee railroad, he built a small shoe shop in Lennox—one of the first buildings and business places in the new settlement. After a few years of residing on the farm, with Mr. Thickett walking to and from his little Lennox shoe shop, the family moved to Lennox. By then the early businessman had attained a good business patronage, and added a stock of new shoes. Routines of the early shoe-maker included the measuring of customers' feet and making of boots and shoes for the entire family. Mr. Thickett was born December 20, 1836 near Sheffield, England. Mrs. Thickett (nee Thirza Straw) was born December 30, 1834, and likewise spent her early years in the vicinity of the English city. The couple was married at the parish church, Sheffield, England, August 1, 1858. They immigrated to the United States in 1868, settling in Shannon, IL. where they remained until coming to the Lennox vicinity in 1876. Ten children were born to this union, reading as follows: Isaac, Mary Jane, Esther, Ann E., Ellen, Rosa, Lilly, Joseph, George T., and Wilfred D. Two are presently living, Rosa (Mrs. John J. Bauman) of Portland, Oregon, and Joe, Sioux Falls (S. D.) Mr. Thickett passed away December 28, 1889, at Lennox, terminating his business activities here. Mrs. Thickett attained the age of 93 prior to her death January 28, 1928. Mr. and Mrs. Thickett are buried in their family lot here.
