Tom was born July 4, 1920, to Charles E. and Mary Catherine Smith Roney of Oakes, N.D. He graduated from Oakes High School and, in 1942, received a bachelor's degree in commerce from the University of North Dakota (UND). A member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and ROTC, Tom was commissioned into the U.S. Army as a lieutenant after graduation. In 1943 he married Margaret (Peggy) Blumer of Ellendale, N.D. During World War II, Tom was deployed to Europe, serving with the infantry in France. He was captured and held as a prisoner of war until the war's end, bravely surviving the death march from Poland to Germany during the winter of 1945. [Originally held at OFLAG 64, Poland. After a long march beginning in late January 1945, he arrived at OFLAG XIII-B, Hammelburg, Bavaria, Germany where he appears on the Roster of American POW's for that camp.] After the war, Tom completed law school at UND and established a law practice in Carrington, N.D. Called back to active duty in 1951, he served with the Army JAG Corps, stationed in Okinawa, during the Korean conflict. He was awarded three Bronze Stars. Tom ultimately served 20 years in the North Dakota National Guard, retiring with the rank of major. Returning to North Dakota, Tom served as state's attorney for Foster County until 1959. He changed paths at that time, becoming president of Foster County Bank and Trust Company. His banking career spanned 26 years. Tom, a man of great energy and warmth, enjoyed travel, reading, and good golf shots. He and wife, Elle, were members of Pelican Pointe Country Club in Venice. This true gentleman was also a parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Tom was preceded in death by his first wife, Peggy, Margaret Agnes Blumer Roney 1920-1989, who is also buried here. Half of Tom's cremains are here and half in Sarasota, FL (ID: 84934003) beside his 2nd wife, Eleanor Prince 1921-2015. Also died are brothers, Don Roney 1916-2009, John Roney 1918-2009, Gerald(Jerry) Roney 1935-2003, Charles (Chuck) Roney 1928-2001, and a sister, Mary Jane Roney LeVoir 1922-2005.
