Obituary from the New Hampton Tribune, August 4,1896: Thomas Mangan was among the earliest settlers in Chickasaw County, coming to Utica Township in the early days and enduring all the hardships incident to pioneer life. He was a lifelong Democrat and has been a familiar face at nearly every Democratic Convention in this country for years. For more than a year, his declining health has prevented him from mingling with old friends. Until recently, however, his condition was not regarded as serious. He leaves a wife and nine children to mourn his death. The funeral occurred on Saturday (1 August 1896) at the Catholic Church in Lawler, of which he was a faithful and devoted member. A large number of friends attended to pay their last respects to his memory. The Tribune regrets that the data for a more extended notice could not be obtained.
