Quite often mentioned with the early day activities in this community, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas B. Quigley were among the original homesteaders of Lennox. This native Irish couple took active roles in the affairs of the early settlement. Both were born in Ireland, the former in Roscommon County, and the latter on the northeast coast of that nation. Mr. Quigley was born February 17, 1843, at Connaught, the son of Bartholomew and Mary (Brachena) Quigley, natives of that country. In 1856 the family immigrated to the United States and settled in Edgerton, Rock County, Wis. In 1862 Mr. Quigley (Thomas B.) enlisted in Company E., 32nd Wisconsin regiment, infantry, and that unit was immediately transferred to the front in Tennessee and in the following months Mr. Quigley served under Generals Grant, Sherman and McPherson, until after the fall of Vicksburg. He was in the battle of Coldwater, Miss., and Tupelo of the same state, the latter engagement being the fiercest and hardest fought little battle that he participated in. He served until September, 1863, when he returned home and was mustered out at Madison, Wis., going then to Rock County, and in 1869 was united in marriage at Edgerton to Miss Bessie Darnin. In 1871 the couple settled at Baraboo, Wis., and in 1878 emigrated to Dakota Territory and Lincoln County, filing on his homestead in the south part of the present Lennox town site. Mr. Quigley was a member of the Lennox G.A.R., and a faithful member of the St. Mary Magdalen's Catholic Church here. He had the distinction of having experienced more battlefield action than anyone in this state—in the Civil war—extending over a period of three and one-half years, and in that time served in 17 all-day battles. He was presented a metal by Governor Sheldon June 4, 1894 at Chamberlain (S. D.) at a soldier's encampment. Mr. Quigley passed away in 1899. Mrs. Quigley—nee Bessie Darnin —was born at Thalle, Ireland, March 18, 1850. She was 89 recently and still resides in Sioux Falls, enjoying good health. In the spring of 1878 she came with her husband to Dakota Territory, unloading east of Luverne, Minn., and then completing the trek overland to Sioux Falls, and in the fall of that year homesteaded, within the first incorporation of Lennox. The first railroad survey was conducted five miles south of here; however it was later changed to the present route of the C. M. St. P. & Pacific railroad. In 1878 they took a tree claim and pre-emption four miles south of Lennox, later selling the relinquishment. Seven children were born to this union, namely: Robert B., Worthing; Thomas, Glendale, Calif.; Daniel, Omaha, Neb.; Lizzie (Hessenius), Des Moines, IA.; Cecelia (Mrs. Harry Little), Eldridge, N. D.; Nellie (Hartman), Sioux Falls, and George, who died in North Dakota. Mr. Quigley, who built the first residence house in Lennox, also operated the first meat market here. He was a prominent figure in Lennox celebration parades.
