Description	:	Son of Jacob Belew and Sarah Wilburn. Captain Thomas Belew, Commanding Company G, 7th Tennessee Cavalry (US) Volunteers (during the American Civil War.) The 7th Tennessee Cavalry Regiment, U.S.A. was organized at Trenton, Gibson County, Tennessee, on 14 November 1862, and was mustered out of service at Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee, on 9 August 1865. Company G was one of the original nine companies formed to make up the 7th Regiment. Thomas Belew, a father of nine children and a farmer, was elected as the unit commander. (mmillertx56) Born in Giles County, Tennessee, Belew moved to Clarksburg, Carroll County with his family as a child. At age 39 he raised Company G mainly from among his neighbors in the Clarksburg area. He was 6'1" tall, light complexion, hazel eyes and dark hair. He farmed for aliving. Captured at Trenton with the regiment in December1862, he spent time at parole camp at Camp Chase, Ohio. While there he resigned his commission and received an honorable discharge on April 10, 1863 after only nine months service. After the war he returned to farming and may have owned a saloon for a time in the Clarksburg area. He applied for, and received, restitution from the Southern Claims Commission for losses during the war. Belew has a military marker with no dates in the Bennett-Belew Cemetery near Clarksburg.
