Mr Blackburn was one of the wealthy farmers of Minerva township, where he owned 593 acres of prime Iowa agricultural land, and where he was looked upon as an example of prudence and thrift. He had a wife acquaintance throughout the county, and there are a number of people in this vicinity who counted him among their friends. Mr Blackburn was born October 23, 1856 in Jefferson county, Ohio and came to Marshall county in 1865, locating in Minerva township, one and three-quarters miles south west of Clemons. The old homestead he still owned at the time of his death, together with other valuable land in Minerva and Liberty townships. He was twice married, his first wife Mrs Mary Winterbottom Blackburn, dying before he left Ohio. His second marriage was to Miss Ruth S Hardgrove in 1865 and she survives him. Mr Blackburn was the father of ten children. The three by his first wife died, as did also one by his second marriage. Two brothers and three sisters survive the deceased. Of these David Blackburn resides at St Anthony, James in Ohio and the three sisters in Ohio. Funeral services were held from the Christian church in Clemons last Friday afternoon and they were largely attended. Interment was made in the Clemons cemetery. Among the farmers and stock raisers of Marshall county of a past generation the late Thomas Blackburn, of Clemons, was especially conspicuous, he having achieved marked results in the face of obstacles and he occupied a prominent place in the conﬁdence and esteem of his fellow men, and it is safe to presume that his inﬂuence and example have done as much, if not more, than any other agency in the vicinity honored by his citizenship to promote the general good; that he honored the county by his life of industry and successful endeavor is freely conceded by all who knew him. Mr. Blackburn was born in Jefferson county, Ohio, October 23, 1836, and he was the son of Moses and Julia (Long) Blackburn, an excellent old Buckeye family, of whom extended mention is made in the sketch of David Blackburn, appearing elsewhere in this volume. Thomas Blackburn was reared on the home farm and when but a boy became acquainted with hard work during the crop seasons. In the winter time he attended the public schools of Jefferson county, Ohio. When eighteen years of age he went to Knox county, Ohio, with his parents, and in December, 1866, he came to Marshall county, Iowa, and located on what was known as the Patterson farm of one hundred and sixty acres. He prospered by hard work and good management and became one of the leading agriculturists and large land owners of Marshall county having added to his original purchase until he had five hundred acres of valuable land, which he kept well improved and under a high state of cultivation. In connection with general farming he was an extensive stock raiser and no small part of his income was derived from the successful handling of various grades of live stock. In 1878 he came to Clemons and purchased seventy acres, on which he built a modern, commodious and attractive residence within the city limits, and here Mrs. Blackburn still resides, her well furnished and neatly kept home being the center of interest and the frequent gathering place of her many friends. Here Mr. Blackburn's death occurred on March 19, 1902, leaving behind him a valuable estate and, what is more to be desired, the record of a life well spent and an unblemished reputation. Politically, Mr. Blackburn was a Republican. but he was not an aspirant for the honors and emoluments of ofﬁce. He was a worthy member of the Christian church and a liberal supporter of the same. Mrs. Blackburn also affiliates with this denomination. On September 5, 1865, Mr. Blackburn was united in marriage with Ruth Hardgrove, who proved to be a very faithful helpmeet and whose encouragement and counsel were responsible in no small degree for his large material success. She was born in Wayne county, Ohio, January 24, 1835, the daughter of Wilson C. and Susan (Jackson) Hardgrove, both natives of Pennsylvania, the father having been in the war of 1812. He and his wife went to Wayne county, Ohio, in an early day, and thence to Knox county, where Mr. Hardgrove's death occurred in about 1855. Mrs. Hardgrove went to Boone county, Ohio, and made her home with a daughter, Mrs. McKenney, and there her death occurred. They were the parents of nine children, two of whom are living at this writing. Mr. Hardgrove was a Freemason, a Whig and later a Republican. He was reared a Quaker and his wife was a Baptist. To Mr. and Mrs. Blackburn the following children were born: Fannie, deceased; Effie died when thirty-eight years old; David; Laura is now Mrs. Atkinson; Burr; Jennie married a Mr. Jones; Ernest and Fannie are deceased.
