He was an old and highly respected citizen of this community. he was born in Lancashire county, England, July 4, 1819, and emigrated to America in 1835. Arriving in this country he settled in Madison county, Indiana, where he spent most of his life until 1884, when he came to Cherokee, Kansas, purchased property and made it his home until his death. He had attained the age of 69 years and 1 month. During a long and useful life, he had established a character distinguished for integrity, truthfulness, reliability, and uprightness. Affable among his friends, courteous among his acquaintances, obliging to his neighbors, kind and tender in his family, he won the affection and esteem of mankind. As a citizen he was peaceable and law abiding, intelligent and industrious, and by prudence, honesty, and industry he had accumulated sufficient means to provide for old age, and to leave his family in comfort. For about 14 years he had been a member of the Methodist church united in Madison county, Indiana. For 30 years he had belonged to the Masonic Fraternity, and for 25 years to the order of Odd Fellows. He also belonged to other civic societies, and sought and enjoyed the association and friendship of good men. His funeral at the M.E. church in Cherokee was largely attended, taking place Tuesday, August 7. The appropriate song service, selected and rendered by the M.E. choir, touched the hearts of the great audience, and many an eye was moistened with tears at the solemn, tender cadence of music, which still breathed hope and triumph, amid bereavement and sorrow. Addresses were given by Elders Smith, Wright and Moore, after which the memorial services were conducted by the AF&AM Lodge of Cherokee, when the concluding services were impressively rendered by the IOOF as they tenderly laid him to rest in the Cherokee cemetery. His wife, children and grandchildren have the sympathy of the entire community in their great loss. His son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Bryant, from Pendleton, Indiana, reached Cherokee just in time to join in the funeral march to the church. Long and affectionately will the memory of Uncle Thomas Gee linger in the hearts of hundreds of old friends. Benj. H.
