Description	:	Thomas Carter Flack, the youngest son of the three children of Thomas W and Katherine Bendermann Flack, was born at the family farm four and one half miles south of Minden on Dec 13, 1911. Read More	Thomas Carter Flack, the youngest son of the three children of Thomas W and Katherine Bendermann Flack, was born at the family farm four and one half miles south of Minden on Dec 13, 1911. He attended District School No 68 and graduated from the Minden High School class of 1931. Following high school he attended business college at Hastings, Nebraska and Kansas State College at Pittsburg. For the next few he worked on the newspapers and learned the mechanics of typesetting machines from the head machinist of the Sioux City Tribute at Sioux Iowa Sentinel, a weekly newspaper. The Des Moines Register ran a feature proclaiming him to be the youngest publisher in the state. During this time, Tom married Imogene Berndt, and the couple resided in Onawa until the business was sold in 1938 when he was offered a job in Cleveland, Ohio as head machinist for typesetting company. Peacetime conscription for the armed forces began before Pearl Harbor and when the lottery was held in Washington, Tom's number was the fifth drawn. Tom was accepted by the Navy aircraft factory to set up metal working machines and to teach machine operation to recruits. During the years at the factory, he attended night school at Case Technical in Cleveland and Carnegie Tech in Pittsburg where he acquired an "AA" rating equal in rank with toolmakers. At the close of World War II, Tom, with his wife, Imogene, who had been head pharmacist at the Marine Hospital in Cleveland during the war, returned to Minden and engaged in farming on the home farm, establishing a Grade A dairy for eight years. After selling the dairy, he returned to his old trade of servicing typesetting equipment throughout the Midwest during the winters. Later, he found a job closer to home in a commercial print shop in Kearney, Nebraska. In November of 1959, Imogene passed away unexpectedly. The following spring the family accompanied by Tom's sister, Ruth Flack, moved to Kearney. There, Tom was employed by Kearney State College as Head of the Printing Department until 1970 when a serious heart attack forced him to retire from the college. He accepted a position as Civil Defense Director for Buffalo County until 1974. The same year Tom and Ruth moved to Azle, Texas, next door to his daughter, Barbara and her family. He enjoyed his leisure time working in the yard, in the garden and with his livestock. Tom passed away in his sleep on July 26, 1988, at Azle Manor after several months of ill health complicated by a broken hip and surgery in November 1987. He was preceded in death by his wife, Imogene, in 1959, and his brother Floyd in 1979. Survivors include his sister, Ruth Flack of Azle, Texas; his daughters, Susanne Lindau of Kearney, Nebraska and Barbara and her husband Jim Minter of Azle, Texas; three grandchildren, Tamara and Chad Lindau and Kathryn Minter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
