I welcome and encourage folks to call those and any other errors to my attention.] State of North Carolina Cabarrus County: On this 17th day of January 1825, personally appeared in open Court, being a Court of Record, for Cabarrus County, Thomas Cassels, resident of the County of Montgomery, State of North Carolina, who being first sworn, upon the holy evangelist of Almighty God, doth on his oath, declare that he served in the revolutionary war as follows – That he enlisted a short time after the commencement of the Revolutionary War, in the County of Orange, North Carolina, in the first Regiment under Captain Roger Moore, and Archibald Little [sic, Archibald Lytle] Colonel of the Regiment; that he served three years and was discharged at Fort Constitution, upon Kings River, and that he has lost said discharge. That he was in the Battles of Monmouth and at White Plains. That himself and one Powel Riggins enlisted at the same time: whose name can be found on the Records – as he understands. And I do solemnly swear that I was a resident Citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift, sale or in any manner whatever disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provision of an act of Congress entitled “an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the revolutionary war” passed on the 18th day of March 1818, and that I have not nor has any person in trust for me any property, or securities, contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed Schedule 2 Horses Value $60.00 2 Cows 3 Small Head of Cattle 20.00 20 Head of Hogs (large & small) 25.00 200 Acres of land value 100.00 $207.00 [sic] Notes to the of 20.00 $227.00 [sic] Sworn to in open Court S/ Dan Coleman, Clk S/ Thos. Cassels, X his mark And the said Thomas Cassels says that he has for persons and family – his wife, about perhaps sixty-four or five years old, and has had the white swelling in her arm and unable to do any work of consequence. A small boy – an orphan boy – his daughter who lives with me and works for herself and that he himself is disabled by a stroke of his arm, with a sword in the revolutionary war from doing any labor of consequence, together with old age and that he is between 70 and 80 years of age. Sworn to in open Court S/ Dan Coleman, Clk S/ Thos. Cassels, X his mark State of North Carolina Secretary's Office I William Hill Secretary of State in and for the State aforesaid, do certify that it appears from the musterrolls of the Continental line of this State in the revolutionary war, that Thomas Caswell a private in Captain Goodman's Company of the fourth Regiment was mustered on the 15th of July 1776 for the term of three years that he was made a Corporal December 1778, and discharged 16th June 1779 Given under my hand this 23rd of April 1825 S/ Wm Hill From examining the book and papers in this office I am of opinion the person calling himself Thomas Cassels in his declaration accompanying this certificate is the same person called by the name of Thomas Caswell in the rolls from which the above certificate is made. Given as above S/ Wm Hill [Veteran was pensioned at the rate of eight dollars per month commencing July 19, 1825, for three years service as a private in the North Carolina Continental line.]
