Aquila Chase m. probably Martha Jelliman, and had Aquila Chase, Mariner of Newbury, Massachusetts, b. circa 1618, in England; d. 29th December 1670; came from Cornwall England, and settled first at Hampton, Massachusetts, 1640, and in Newbury Massachusetts, 1646; he was probably the first of this branch of the Chase family in America; m. Chase - The Chase family came originally for England, three brothers, William, Thomas, and Aquila, being the immigrants in the early days of the colony, and from these have sprung the numerous families of that name throughout the country. Thomas and Aquila settled in Hampton and Newbury. From "Seven Generations of the descendants of Aquila and Thomas Chase" page 475 "Thomas Chase and His Descendants Thomas(1) Chase, a brother of Aquila (2), first appears in New England, at Hampton, NH among the second group of settlers there having a grant of land in June 1640. (HIstory of Hampton 1:18). Her married about 1642, Elizabeth Philbrick (Philbrook), daughter of Thomas and Elizabth Philbrick who settled in Watertown as early as 1636 and removed to Hampton in 1645." "He and his brother Aquila received grasnts at the same time. Fourteen persons had received grants on 24 Dec 1639, and one person on 14 Jan 1640. These earliest grants were of large tracts for farms but those made in June 1640, to the number of fifty-six, were small tracts for house lots." "On 23 February 1645/6 there were granted to sixty proprietors of house lots in Hampton, one or more shares in the "common". Aquila Chase received one share, and Thomas Chase two shares while some others received three shares. The comman land had been already divided in 147 shares which were given to those who had house lots. (Down's History of Hampton, 1:33)" "Thomas Chase was married about two or three years before his brother was married and he not only had a wife on 23 Feb 1545/6, but at least two small children. This is why he received two shares of the comon lands while his brother had only one." "Down in his History of Hampton (2:635) states that Thomas was 'the elder of the brothers'. It is believed that this statement is baded on the fact that Thomas married and was the father of two children before the marriage of AQuila.
