Description	:	Son of John C Coulthwaite (b. 1817). Thomas and Margaret lived in Liverpool for 18 years where they were 'cow keepers' and sold milk. After losing their herd to foot and mouth disease, they kept a general store on the waterfront. Following the death of Thomas' mother, they moved back to Yorkshire to help his father until he died in 1892. Thomas then decided to emigrate and sold his interest in the farm to his brother. Following the death of Thomas' mother, they moved back to Yorkshire to help his father until he died in 1892. Thomas then decided to emigrate and sold his interest in the farm to his brother. March 1893 found them on their way with their children: John (Jack), Mary Ann (Polly), Eleanor, Elizabeth,Mabel and Thomas. They sailed on "The Labrador" which carried cattle to Britain and was made clean and comfortable for settlers on the return trip to Canada. The trip was scheduled to be a nine-day voyage but was much longer. The Atlantic was very stormy; many of the sailors were ill. They travelled across Canada by train which was very uncomfortable. There were no sleepers and the seats were bare boards. Thomas planned on settling at Winnipeg, but the land there was all gone, so they continued on to Alberta. While on the train leaflets were distributed recommending Poplar Grove (now Innisfail). They took a homestead east of town and built a log shack with sod roof, then moved in a wagon drawn by a team of oxen. The weather was warm and about three miles east of Innisfail the oxen galloped into a slough and lay down. A neighbor who was plowing nearby came with a team of horses to pull them out, but had the misfortune of upsetting the wagon. Two months after arriving, Margaret gave birth to son, Robert.
