Description	:	AURORA — Thomas Disher Cox, 82, of Aurora died Friday, Dec. 13, 2013, at Hamilton Manor. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Messiah Lutheran Church in Aurora. Pastor Sheryl Kester Beyer will officiate. There will be no visitation. Higby-McQuiston Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Cox was born Nov. 11, 1931, in Burchard to Jerome Lee and Dorothy Harriet (Disher) Cox. Those left to cherish his memory are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Kari Eppert of Central City, Amy and Dennis Placzek of Kearney, and Tami and Harold Hastings of Dover, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Barb Cox of Aurora; and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Jerry Cox of California and George and Leona Cox of Gothenburg. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and their spouses, Trevor (Jill) Eppert, Kirby Eppert, Chase (Heather) Placzek, Lydia Placzek, Kassi and Brandon Hastings and Elizabeth and Trey Cox; three brothers-in-law, Bob Utermohlen of Mankato, Minn., Tim Buckley of Anchorage, Alaska, and David Buckley of Lincoln; a sister-in-law, Paula (Jeff) Leach of Chicago, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews. Tom was raised in Burchard and graduated from Burchard High School in 1949. In April 1952, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He took basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and was then sent overseas to Germany. He was stationed at Mannheim, Germany, where he worked in a division personnel office. While in Germany, he was able to visit Paris, France, and one of the high spots of his tour was visiting Garmarsh, Germany. He went to the top of the mountain Zugpitsch. From the top of the mountain he was able to view the snow-covered Alps. He returned to the United State in April 1954, where he was discharged at Fort Sheridan, Ill. Tom was united in marriage to Sandra Buckley on Aug. 25, 1956, at Hastings. The newlyweds moved to Omaha where Tom worked for ConAgra. During his career with ConAgra the family moved from Omaha after eight years, and went on to live in Michigan, Kansas City and Tampa, Fla. Tom retired in 1997. He worked for the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department for six and a half years until retiring again in 2006. In June of 2007, they moved to Aurora to be closer to family. Sandra passed away on Aug. 17, 2013. Tom was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. He was an adult member of the Boys Scouts of America for 45 years, serving in many positions. He enjoyed attending his children's and grandchildren's activities. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and sister, Mary Utermohlen.
