CUMBERLAND — Thomas Edgar Mudge, of 13811 Cardinal Drive, S.E., Cumberland, Maryland, died Tuesday, July 25, 1995, at The Memorial Hospital, Cumberland. He was aged 59 years, 10 months, and 6 days. Born September 19, 1935, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Paul L. Mudge and Jessie Marie (Furlow) Mudge. He was reared by his paternal grandparents, Raymond Reynolds and Chloe (True) Mudge Reynolds Hoopengardner. Mr. Mudge was an instrument repairman with the Kelly-Springfield Tire Co. for 32 years and afterwards a maintenance dispatcher for the City of Cumberland Housing Department. He was a graduate of Fort Hill High School, Class of 1954, and he served 8 years with the Naval Reserves. In 1973, he assisted in the establishment of the Queen City Lightweight Football League, which he served as the founding treasurer and as coach and trainer for the "redskins" team for seven years. He was a member of the Fort Hill High School "F" Club, which he served for two years (1977-79) as president. Mr. Mudge grew up attending Kingsley Methodist Church, and from 1974 he was a faithful member of Christ United Methodist Church, where he served as past president and current vice-president of The United Methodist Men, as a former trustee, and as a member of the Administrative Board and the Lena Bucy Memorial Sunday School Class. He was an avid gardener and woodworker, and he enjoyed photography and cooking. Surviving are his wife of thirty-eight years, Dollie M. (Rice) Mudge; two sons: Michael Allen Mudge and wife Rhonda of Crellin, Maryland, and Gerald K. "Jerry" Mudge and wife Deborah of Martinsburg, W. Virginia; one half-sister, Paula J. (Mudge) Stevenson and husband Thomas of Chesapeake, Virginia; a special cousin, Raymond Benton of Baltimore; his devoted mother-in-law, Audrey M. (Jones) Rice of Cumberland; three grandchildren: Bethany C. Mudge, Ashley E. Mudge, and Matthew R.T. Mudge, all of Martinsburg; and a very loving extended family. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, 108 Virginia Avenue, on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be conducted at the Christ United Methodist Church, Race & Fourth Streets, on Saturday, July 29, at 10:30 a.m., with the Rev. Stan G. Cardwell and the Rev. Wayne R. Turner officiating. Friends will be received there one hour prior to services. Interment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park. Pallbearers will be nephews: Scott Christopher, Todd Christopher, Jay Christopher, Steve Rice, Kevin Rice, and Todd Martin. Contributions may be made to Christ United Methodist Church or to the American Lung Association. F U N E R A L A Service of Death and Resurrection in Honor of Thomas E. Mudge and in Praise of God was held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 29, 1995, at Christ United Methodist Church, 336 Race Street, Cumberland, Maryland, with about a hundred family and friends in attendance. Using I Corinthians 9:24-37 and John 19:1-7 as the Scripture texts, the Rev. Stan G. Cardwell delivered the sermon and the Rev. Wayne R. Turner offered the eulogy. "Dwelling in Beulah Land" and "In the Garden" were sung as congregational hymns. A combined choir of Christ United Methodist Church and Crellin United Brethren in Christ offered as an anthem "Come and Dine," which had been Tommy's favorite hymn since the early 1940's, when his grandparents, Raymond and Chloe Reynolds, sent him each summer to Camp Cliffside, where the boys sang it every evening as they marched into the dining hall. The graveside service at Hillcrest Burial Park included Scriptures, prayers, and recitations of The Twenty-third Psalm and The Lord's Prayer.
