Read More	Oak Lake News Thursday December 16, 1926 Thomas Modeland Dies Suddenly Residents of Oak Lake and district learned with deep regret of the sad and unexpected death of Thomas Modeland which occurred at his home in Oak Lake on Tuesday of this week, aged 70 years, 8 months and 3 days. He had been attending his customary chores on Tuesday evening, and had spoken to his wife, apparently in his usual health, and two minutes later, fell dead, heart failure being the cause of his death. The late Mr. Modeland was one of the eldest settlers in Manitoba. He was born in Travistock, Ont. in 1856, and came west to Winnipeg in 1879. He worked for some time on the Canadian Pacific Railway in the Lake of the Woods district. He then homesteaded in the Killarney district, but moved the same year and settled at Burnside where he remained for ten years. Leaving there he stayed in Griswold one year and then settled permanently in Oak Lake where he farmed for the past 37 years. A few years ago, he retired and came to Oak Lake where he resided until the time of his death. In 1882, Mr. Modeland married Mrs. Gofton formerly Miss Elizabeth Doherty. The following child survive; Mrs. Dave Morfitt, Roblin, Mrs. E.R. Ronberg, William, Norman, of Oak Lake; Millie, a nurse at Grand Rapids, Mich., Seward, Winnipeg, Alvin, Detroit, and Mrs. Ben Nichols, North Battleford. In later life, Mr. Modeland married Mrs. Hutton who also survives him. Deceased served as a trustee of his school district for a number of years, and was also a member of the Methodist Church. The funeral was held at the family residence on Thursday of this week and was attended by a large gathering of old time friends and acquaintances who came to pay their last respects to the deceased. Rev. Thos. Merryweather conducted the service. Interment was made in Oak Lake Cemetery. The "News" joins the community in extending heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
