He was born in Turton on March 22, 1933, to Leon and Leone (Fortin) Klapperich on the family farm. He graduated from Turton in 1951 and joined the Navy on Oct. 2, 1952, at the Great Lakes Training Center in Chicago. His tours included the Mediterranean and many countries. Read More	Thomas E. Klapperich Sr., 67, Turton, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2000, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. He was born in Turton on March 22, 1933, to Leon and Leone (Fortin) Klapperich on the family farm. He graduated from Turton in 1951 and joined the Navy on Oct. 2, 1952, at the Great Lakes Training Center in Chicago. His tours included the Mediterranean and many countries. He was aboard the USS Gyatt and the USS Massey. While aboard the USS Massey, he received an assignment as personnel manager in Norfolk, Va. Working in Norfolk, he met Margaret (Peggy) Thomas, and on March 3, 1956, they married in Elizabeth City, N.C. He received an honorable discharge on Sept. 20, 1956. He moved to Turton to farm. In 1960, he moved to Rapid City, where he worked for Gates Mobil, Highland Beverage and Amcon (Crown Candy). After retiring from Amcon in January 1996, they moved to Turton. Tom was best-known for his love of his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, hunting, fishing, camping and watching his children and grandchildren play sports. Survivors include two sons, Thomas Klapperich Jr. and wife Pam Strand, Rapid City, and Timothy Klapperich and wife Desiree, Rapid City; four daughters, Judy and husband Mitchell Johnson, Rapid City, Jannele and husband Bret Nelson, Omaha, Neb., Jonette and husband Christopher Mommaerts, Abilene, Texas, and Jamie and husband Merrick Monaghan, Yankton; 19 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Larry and wife Sharon Klapperich, Groton, Bernie and wife Bobbi Klapperich, Watertown, and William (Bill) and wife Carol Klapperich, Spearfish; four sisters, Ann and husband Boyd Kitterman, Wall, Betty and husband Joe Barrie, Turton, Sally Wolberg, Rapid City, and Pat and husband Paul Paulsen, Wall. Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, in 1996; his parents, Leon and Leone; and his infant sister, Monica. His special friends were Jerry Johnson, Harlan Brand, Roxy Jurrens, Stefanie Gilmour, Dennis Niedermeyer and many more too numerous to mention. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 30, at St. Therese Church, 532 Adams St. in Rapid City, with Father Brian Lane officiating. A reception will follow in the church basement. Behrens Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
