Thomas Pelkey Killed Instantly While Working Near St. John, N.B., July 8 Thomas Pelkey of Four Falls, NB well known in Fort Fairfield, where he has relatives, was instantly killed Fri. forenoon, July 8, a few miles this side of St. John while working on what is called the Greenwich hill. He was employed as foreman for Armstrong Brothers' construction crew engaged in cutting down the steep "Devil's Back" Hill. At the time of the accident he was operating a compressed air drill, and, finding his way impeded by some wires left from blasting operations, he jerked a length of wire from the pile of wire in which it was entangled. It lashed and curved up over his head, and came down in contact with the power line, with immediately fatal results for Mr. Pelkey. Fellow workers rushed the victim to the home of Gordon Lindsay, near by, where futile efforts toward revival were made. Dr. DeVarnet Jack was hurried to the scene. About an hour and a half after the accident Mr. Pelkey was officially pronounced dead, and his body was taken to the Belyea Undertaking Parlors at Glenwood. The body was brought to Four Falls, N. B., to the home of his eldest brother George Pelkey, near the Fort Fairfield line, and the funeral was held at that place Mon. afternoon. The funeral was very largely attended indeed. It is said that about a thousand friends called at the house between Sat. night and Mon. to offer sympathy. Officiating at the funeral was Rev. R. W. Demmings of Aroostook. The body was buried in the family lot in Riverside cemetery. Mr. Pelkey left two children – Richard and Miss Irene, both of London, Ontario. Three brothers also survive – George of Four Falls and Walter and Albert of California Settlement; also six sisters, as follows: Mrs. Stephen Nichols, Mrs. James McNamee, and Mrs. John Russell, Fort Fairfield; Mrs. Leonard Giggey, Illahe, Oregon; Mrs. Robert Russell, Fort Fairfield, and Mrs. Owen Ayers, Fort Fairfield. Mr. Pelkey was a son of the late Mr. And Mrs. Edward Pelkey of Four Falls. He was married some years ago to Miss Daisy Little of Nova Scotia. That a strong and useful man, devoted to good works, should thus be snatched so quickly and cruelly from his activities and numerous friends, while yet in the morning of life, is a very sad thing indeed.
