Smith Throws a Shadow Over the Town Sept. 20, 1901 This community was greatly shocked last Saturday morning by learning of the death of Thomas E. Smith. Mr. Smith was taken sick Wednesday afternoon with a severe headache which he is subject to. This continued through the day and Thursday. Friday he had callers and was cheerful and happy, and felt quite well, but later his head pained him worse, and Dr. Belden, the family physician, was called and said he feared a stroke of apoplexy which he had soon after, passing away at 5.30 o'clock that night. Mr. Smith was 46 years old, and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Hannibal Smith, who moved to this town in the winter of 1871-72, the deceased having been a resident of this place since. He was a graduate of Amherst Agricultural College, and was married Sept. 10, 1879 to Miss Alma Smith. Two children were the fruit of this marriage; Arthur, who is still living, and Hannibal, who was buried August 16th, 1883, aged 17 months, his mother following soon after. Mr. Smith married again - Miss Anna Baker, a cousin of his first wife, in August 1883, and five children were born of this marriage; May, Olive, Walter, Alma and Louisa, all living. In politics Mr. Smith was a staunch Republican, and was many times sent as a delegate to the several conventions. He had also held several of the town offices, and at the time of his death was one of the overseers of the poor, and one of the Trustees of the Public Library. He had a beautiful Christian character, and was identified with the Congregational Church of this place, joining Jan. 30, 1875, and for the past five years had served as one of its deacons. For many years he was superintendent of the Sunday school, and had served as one of its teachers for the past twenty years. He was also identified with the Christian Endeavor movement which was organized in this place in 2886, and became its first president, and had been its corresponding secretary nearly ever since. He had attended several of the international Christian Endeavor conventions. Mr. Smith will be greatly missed in all parts of the Church work, as he was always willing to do whatever duty was assigned him. Only the Sunday before he died in the absence of the pastor, he took charge of the service, and the earnest words spoken and the beautiful prayers offered in behalf of our late president will long be remembered by those present. It may truly be said of our dear brother that he died wit the harness on. One of the sad things connected with his death was the absence of the pastor on his vacation, and he could not be reached in time to get here to attend the funeral. Mr. Smith will also be greatly missed in the social and political life of the town. The funeral was held at the church Sunday afternoon, Rev. Mr. Pierpon of Williamsburg officiating, assisted by the A.O,U.W., of which the deceased was a member, they attending in a body to the number of fifty, coming from Northampton, Florence, Williamsburg, Cummington and Worthington. It was the largest funeral held here in a long time, fully 300 attending. Three selections were beautifully sung by the Purrington Quartet of Haydenville. The deceased's pew and those of his Sabbath School were draped in mourning and decorated with flowers. His Sabbath School class attended in a body, and followed the remains to the cemetery, throwing white asters on the coffin after it was lowered into the grave. The A.O.U.W. had entire charge of the services at the grave. The quartet sang that beautiful selection "Farewell". There were many beautiful flowers, among them a broken column of white and pink asters; an anchor from the A.O.U.W. of phlox and pink roses with the letters "A.O.U.W.". The bearers were Fred Cleveland, Harry Eddy, George Smith, and Henry Eddy, all members of the A.O.U.W. Interment was in the Center Cemetery beside his first wife and child. The deceased leaves to mourn a wife, six children, one sister, Mrs. Electa Rose of Springfield, and a host of friends. Contributor: LK (49519459)
