DOAN, whose home was on section 22, Stewart Twp, York Co, NE, was a worthy representative of one of the prominent and highly respected pioneer families of the county. Mr. Doan was born in Henry Co, IA on June 19, 1853, and was fifteen years old when brought by his parents to York Co, NE. He attended the first district school conducted in Stewart Twp, and was early inured to the arduous labors of transforming wild land into productive and well cultivated fields. On attaining his majority he started out to fight life's battles for himself, and after one year spent in Iowa, located permanently in York Co, NE. After his marriage he rented land on section 26, Stewart Twp, and later moved to the east half of the northeast quarter of the same section, where he made his home until 1887. He then purchased his present farm, and had one hundred and sixty acres under a high slate of cultivation, with the exception of eighteen acres, and was successfully engaged in general farming and stock raising. In April, 1879 was celebrated the marriage of Mr. Doan and Miss Ella May Hendrickson, who was born in Illinois, in 1862. Her parents, Henry and Margaret Hendrickson, came to York Co, NE about 1871 or 1872, and settled near Waco, but later removed to Custer Co, NE where their deaths occurred. Eight children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Doan, but the eldest, Arthur, died at the age of twelve years. The others were Nancy Alice, Mabel, Ellen, Elmer, Maude, Clarkson and Rhuie. Socially, Mr. Doan affiliated with the Ancient Order ofOorder at York; politically, he was Independent, preferring not to be bound by party ties. He served as treasurer of school district No. 35, and his duties of citizenship were always most faithfully and conscientiously discharged. From "Compendium of Biography," Pages 754-5 *********************************** Excerpt from New York Times: In 1880 Mr. Doan was united in marriage to Miss Ella Hendrickson and they have become the parents of the following children: Alice, the wife of Roy Rogers; Ellen, who married Tanney Blount; Elmer; Maude, living at home; Clark; Louie; and Arthur and Mabel, deceased. Mr. Doan is a staunch republican, having supported the men and measures of that party since he was entitled to exercise the franchise. His has given active support to the cause of education along practical lines and has served as school treasurer of his district for several years. He has witnessed the development of this section of the state from pioneer times to the present and has borne his share in the work of progress and improvement, while in the conduct of his private business interests he has always manifested the sterling traits of character which have won him the high regard and esteem of his fellow citizens.
