Description	:	Thomas Francis Herbst's death is fairly well documented as he was enlisted in the Union forces (11th Regiment, Missouri State Militia Cavalry, Company H) and was killed in an ambush at Walkersville, Mo. My research indicates he was born August 23, 1834 in Sussex England to Earnest Francis Herbst and Sarah Burgess. His father was a Sapper & Miner stationed in Madras, India during Thomas' childhood. Thomas remained in Sussex and was mostly raised by his maternal grandparents, Thomas and Mary Burgess. After immigrating to America sometime between 1852 and 1858, he married Anna M. Ross on 18... Ross on 18 Aug 1858 in Knox Co, Missouri. They had two children, a girl (name unknown who died in infancy) and son, Thomas William Herbst who was born just months after his death. His father, Earnest Herbst died while in the service Oct. 10 1843 and is buried somewhere in Madras, India. His mother remarried another widower, Samuel Symonds in MADRAS, INDIA in 1844.
