Thomas Payne, father of the subject of this sketch, was born in Franklin County, Va., on the 24th of November, 1794, and Mary Ann (Spencer) Payne, mother, in Dinwiddie County, in the same State, on the 9th of August, 1799. The grandfather, in an early day, with his family, emigrated from Maryland and settled in Virginia, where the immediate paternal ancestor was born, and subsequently served as a soldier in the war of 1812. Having married sometime in the year 1818, the latter, with his wife, emigrated from their native State, and settled in Fleming County, Ky., in 1830. The journey over the mountains was made in heavy farm wagons, the only means of conveyance in those days, and occupied thirty days. From Kanawha down the Ohio River to Maysville, the passage was made on an old-fashioned steamboat. Landing at Maysville, they went out from the river about twenty-five miles, and settled near Flemingsburg, where they lived during the succeeding four years, at the end of which time they removed thence to Rush County, Ind. by wagon, and located near Fayetteville. In 1849, the family moved into the vicinity of New Salem, in the same county. Thomas F., the second son, was born in Franklin County, Va., on the 22d day of August, 1826, and moved with his parents to Kentucky, thence to Indiana, continuing to be a member of the family until he left home for the purpose of learning a trade. His ideal of an occupation was embodied in the arts and mysteries of a cabinet-maker. He commenced work with a brother of his mother, located in Fayetteville, but finished his trade at Indianapolis. Having finished his trade, he did "jour work" during the two or three years succeeding. Finally, determining to commence business on his own account, he came to Wabash, landing here on his twenty-third birthday, August 23, 1849, at about the hour of 1 o'clock, P.M. Immediately he concentrated all his energies, as well as his finances; he opened a small shop for the manufacture by hand, performing all the labor himself. By dint of perseverance and economy, he established himself in the confidence of his fellow citizens, and laid the foundation of that prosperity which now surrounds him today. It was not until he had established himself in a sufficiently lucrative business to justify, in his opinion, his entering into the marital relation, that he began to consider the propriety of taking that important step. In the meantime, however, he had made the acquaintance of Miss Lucretta Ames, a resident of Attica, Ind., and became engaged to her. On the 28th of October, 1852, the engagement culminated in their union for life, and they set up housekeeping at once. As the issue of this marriage, nine children have been born to the wedded pair, eight boys and one girl -- Elwood P., Bascom Otto, DeWitt C., Ossian A. (died), Frank 0., Anna Laura (Mrs. Frank Adler), Albert J., Fletcher A. and Harmon C. Payne. After a period of incessant toil, in which he has accumulated an ample store of this life's goods, it occurred to him that a brief respite from the cares and responsibilities of his extensive manufacturing business would be an agreeable and proper thing to do. Accordingly, in obedience to the suggestion, he determined to visit Europe, and spend a few months in traveling over that continent and visiting the places of interest in the proposed route, designing to enjoy a season of rest, and improve his opportunities for acquiring information in relation to the manners, customs, etc., of the people of the Old World. With that purpose in view, he left his home in Wabash on the 24th of May, 1883, and sailing on an ocean steamer of the "Cunard Line" six days later. Having visited the principal places of note, and made such observations touching the points of interest to a practical man, he set sail on his return voyage, and on the 12th day of September, 1883, landed at his home in Wabash, well satisfied with what he had seen and learned during his brief tour across the European continent. His reception here was such as to manifest the great respect entertained for him.
