Micek, a resident of Silver Creek for the past sixteen years and prior to that time for several years a resident of Platte county just a few miles east of here, died at the family home in Silver Creek shortly after eight o'clock Monday morning. He had been in failing health for more than a year, and underwent an operation at an Omaha hospital last March, since which time he has been up and around much of the time, but gradually growing weaker from the ravages of cancer. He was born on Nov. 21, 1867, at Tarnov, Poland and came to the United States when he was 18 years of age. He came to Columbus and after working for a short time as a farm hand he took up railroad work and became a boiler-maker, being stationed at various points on the Union Pacific, the latter portion of his railroad service having been at Evanston and Cumberland, Wyo. On August 17, 1891 he was united in marriage at Duncan to Miss Mary Skorupa of Duncan. He continued with the railroad until the year 1907 when he gave up his railroad position and bought a farm near Gardiner, and moved his family from Cumberland to the farm, remaining there until the year 1919 when he sold the farm and moved into Duncan where the family resided for two years, moving to Silver Creek in 1921 where he purchased a residence property near the village park, residing there until his death. Besides his wife he is survived by eight children, four sons and four daughters, Mrs. Emelia Kropatch of Columbus, Mrs. Doris Norris and Miss Loretta Micek of Omaha, Mrs. Florence Lloyd of Chicago, Leo P. Micek of Chadron, Tom and John Micek of Los Angeles, and Steve Micek of Duncan. One son, Clifford, of Scottsbluff, preceded him in death on June 9, 1936. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Mary Micek of Omaha, and eight grandchildren. Funeral services were held at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Silver Creek Thursday morning at 9:30 and were conducted by Fr. Kunkel. Burial was at the Catholic cemetery at Columbus. Four of the children, Tom and John of California, Leo of Chadron and Florence of Chicago were unable to be here for the funeral. Last October all of the children were here for a family reunion, Tom and John stating at that time they would probably be unable to come to the funeral and preferred to come for a visit while he was still alive. Leo's wife is seriously ill, and Florence was under doctor's orders not to attend the funeral. "Tom" Micek, as most of us in the community knew him, had a host of friends who will miss him. He was a man of high principles, strong in his own beliefs of right and wrong, a fine friend but a bitter opponent of those whom he considered had done him an injustice.
