Thomas Gene McCall was born in Plentywood April 13, 1948, the eldest of seven children of Aubrey and Lucy (Goodson) McCall. He spent a lot of time on his grandpa and grandma McCall's farm in the Comertown community, and became like a younger brother to his aunts Viv and Phyllis. His father was a traveling depot agent for the Soo line railway, and Tom traveled to many places with him. In the mid-1950s the family moved to Outlook where Tom helped his Dad and brothers with milking cows and raising pigs and chickens. Tom like playing baseball under his dad's coaching and played basketball for the Outlook Bluejays until his high school graduation there in 1967. He remained an avid fan. He later played horseshoes and was very active in the Montana Leagues and held many state titles, and he pitched in the World Horseshoe Tournament in Spearfish, S.D. He was also very active in bowling and was proud to be able to go to nationals with his uncle, Glenn and brother, Mike every chance he had. He married Vicki Bjorgen Dec. 30, 1973, in Westby, and to that union two beautiful children were born, Patricia Denise, Dec. 1, 1976, and Thomas Gene Jr., June 6, 1981. His pride and joy was his grandchildren — he was "Papa" to Michael Proud, Zachary and Aubrianna ("Abby") McCall and Sylver Lucero. Tom entered the U.S. Army Feb. 10, 1971, and after service in Germany, with his brother Tim, was discharged as a staff sergeant Sept. 2, 1977. He took auto mechanics training at the Vo-Tech center in Helena, and after graduating with an AA degree, worked as a mechanic and also as a custodian before starting work at the U.S. Post Office in Helena. He retired as postmaster two years ago, and returned "home" to Westby where he has lived since. Tom always had multiple projects under way — buying and rebuilding fixer-upper cars and trucks, and then selling them (or not ...) and working on various on-going remodeling projects around the house. He was planning to go to California to work with his brother, Mike. He left unexpectedly, with a lot of unfinished projects! Tom is survived by his ex-wife, Vicki McCall, of Helena; his children, Patty McCall and her fiancé, Jonathen Lucero, of Williston and his son, Tom Jr. and his wife, Lisa, of Billings; grandchildren, Zachary, Michael, Abby and Sylver. He is also survived by a brother, Mike, and his wife, Shawndell, of Knightson, Calif.; and two sisters, Mary Bartnes of Williston and Beth Grad and her husband ,Terry, of Burlington, N.D. Tom was preceded in death by all his grandparents; his parents, Aubrey and Lucy; three brothers, Patrick, Timothy and Herome, and a nephew, Justin Bartnes, as well as by numerous aunts and uncles. Fulkerson Funeral Home of Plentywood is in charge of arrangements.
