Description	:	Thomas Gerald Witt was born in Columbia City, Florida, to Dr. Thomas Walter Witt and Lilla Dawkins Witt in 1915. He moved to Lake City, at the age of 5. In high school there he played quarterback for the Tigers and ran track at Columbia High. Gerald moved to New York City in 1936 after various college experiences at the University of Florida, Tulane University and the University of Virginia, which his father had hoped would produce another doctor. Read More	Thomas Gerald Witt was born in Columbia City, Florida, to Dr. Thomas Walter Witt and Lilla Dawkins Witt in 1915. He moved to Lake City, at the age of 5. In high school there he played quarterback for the Tigers and ran track at Columbia High. Gerald moved to New York City in 1936 after various college experiences at the University of Florida, Tulane University and the University of Virginia, which his father had hoped would produce another doctor. In New York, he found his passion in the theater, not medicine, and soon graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He performed in many off-Broadway plays before entering World War II as a link trainer instructor for pilots, though he had never flown a plane. In 1943, as a lieutenant, he became a bombardier and was stationed in England. His first flight was to Germany where his plane "Shady Lady" was shot down and he spent 18 months as a prisoner of war. After the war ended, Gerald returned to Lake City where he met and married Tullulah May Deen Andrews. In 1951 he started the Home Gas Company where he spent many a day and night delivering gas to homes and farms throughout Lake City and the surrounding counties. In the 1970s, he ran for mayor of Lake City and spent 18 years in that capacity. He loved being mayor, reading literature and writing poetry. Gerald is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lou Witt; his daughters Dede Andrews Collicott (Bob), and Cissy Witt; his son Tom Witt (Angie); grandchildren Lindsey Collicot Weaver (Brandon), Katherine Witt, and Caroline Witt. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter Mandee Collicott.
