"Tom" Ray, 75, of Maquoketa, Iowa, died Tuesday evening, January 4, 2011, at his home. A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 7, 2011, at Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Lahey Funeral Home, Maquoketa. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Maquoketa, Iowa. Thomas H. Ray was born September 11, 1935, in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Max and Isla (Hinckley) Ray. He graduated from Maquoketa High School and continued his education at Wentworth Military Academy and Drake University. Upon graduation he returned to Maquoketa and followed in his father's footsteps as a jeweler. He married Rochelle Kittoe on April 25, 1959, in Osh Kosh, Wisconsin. Together they raised two children. Tom was a registered gemologist, and since 1958, owned and operated Max Ray Jewelry Store in Maquoketa, until a severe stroke caused him to cease working. He was fortunate to spend his last 11 years in his home. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Maquoketa Chamber of Commerce, Timber City Development, the Registered Jewelers Association of America and the Independent Jewelers Association of America. Tom was a gifted jeweler with a great appreciation of music and the arts, which led him on many travels that he very much enjoyed. He enjoyed motorcycle riding and golf. He also loved to watch wrestling, golf, football, baseball and basketball with a special fondness for the Hawkeyes. He is survived by his wife, Rochelle Ray of Maquoketa; two children, Jeffrey (Cindy) Ray of Ardmore, Oklahoma, and Melissa Ray, formerly of California, and currently of Maquoketa; and four grandchildren, Chandler, Forrest, McKenna and Cassidy Ray. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial may be given to Sacred Heart Church, Hospice of Jackson County or Jackson County Historical Society.
