Thomas was the son of John Harbaugh who was born in 1781. John Harbaugh's parents had come from Maryland sometime between 1780 and 1785. The family stopped in Bedford County "for a rest, probably due to sickness. They left two of their children there, saying they would come back for them, but they never returned." It is felt that the parents were killed by Indians or some other disaster befell them. The Griffith family raised the two children, Sophia and John. Sophia married Amos Penrose. John became a miller and married Rachel Hammond and lived at the Blackburn mill. Thomas was one of nine children. He had a twin Samuel, also born on September 19, 1806. His other siblings: Josiah, Nathan Allen, Joseph Hammond, John, Jonah, George, and Sarah Ann. (Harbaugh History)
