Townsend, 80, resident of Brockton, longtime union activist BROCKTON - Thomas H. Townsend, 80, a longtime union activist when he drove a bus for the Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway Company and former vice president of the Greater Brockton Central Labor Council, died early today after suffering a stroke. He was the husband of the late Marjorie D. (Groton) Townsend, who died in 1983. Born on Dec. 4, 1914, he was the son of the late Herbert Oliver Townsend and Beatrice Estella (Damon) Townsend and attended Quincy schools. Mr. Townsend was a bus operator for 42 years, first with Eastern Mass. Street Railway and then with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation authority. He was a leader in two lengthy strikes against Eastern Mass. in 1952 and in 1958. For many years, he served as vice president under former Central Labor President Francis "Ham" Lavigne and was a member of the Boston Carmen's Union, Local 589, at the time of his retirement. "Tom served his union and served his men far above and beyond the call of duty, Marchie LaGrasta, president emeritus of the Greater Brockton Central Labor Council said. "He was also a very good personal friend." Mr. Townsend, an expert carpenter although he wasn't a professional, built his home in Brockton in which he lived since 1949. He was a membe of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He is survived by a son, Enterprise reporter Robert J. Townsend and daughter-in-law, Ronna P. (Cone) Townsend of Hull; two grandsons, Thomas H. Townsend, a student at Indiana University School of Law, and Robert C. Townsend of Abington; a granddaughter, Dawn G. Townsend of Amherst, and a close friend, Blanche Johnson of Brockton. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 80 Pleasant St., Brockton. The Rev. James R. Hiles will officiate at the services. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Brockton. Arrangements are by Sampson & Hall Funerals, 309 Main St., Brockton. (The Brockton Enterprise, Sep. 29, 1995, p.15, supplemented with a later obituary)
