Leaving his wife and daughter Anna in Norway, Thomas immigrated to America in the late 1800s in search of a better way of earning a livelihood for his family. THOMAS AND ANNE SJULE Thomas Sjule was born September 2, 1872 in Snaasen, Norway. He was married to Anne Horjem. Leaving his wife and daughter Anna in Norway, Thomas immigrated to America in the late 1800s in search of a better way of earning a livelihood for his family. After working for three years in a sugar factory in San Francisco, California he returned to Norway to bring his wife and daughter to America. With his family he returned to the United States and came to N. D. and filed on land in Dalen Township in the Turtle Mountains. Eleven children were born to this union four of whom died in infancy. Anna as a young woman passed away from the dread disease diptheria. In January of 1925 Mrs Shule died leaving Thomas with a family of six children all at home -- Olav, Oscar, Rangvald, twins Alma and Thormod, and John the youngest at age 9. Of the group named Olav and Alma are both deceased. Thomas was very active in church and community affairs. He was a charter member of Inherred Church and had a hand in locating the church where it still stands. His entire family was baptized and confirmed in this church. He served the church in many capacities, member of the school board for many years and held various positions in the township as well as assessor. For a time he was a member of the Federal Land Bank Board. His last years were spent on the family farm with two sons Thormod and John. He died in 1955. Thormod and John Sjule purchased the home farm and are currently residing there. Thormod was born March 17, 1914. He was a member of the Armed Forces of the U. S. from 1942-1945. John was born April 11, 1915 on the home farm. They still maintain their membership in the Inherred Church, the only active church in the Turtle Mountains.
