Description	:	Thomas James Allen, 84, of Burlington, died at 9:10 am Saturday, September 10, 2011, at the Great River Medical Center - Klein Center in Burlington. Born May 5, 1927, in Burlington, he was the son of Herbert W. and Rose C. Donahue Allen. On October 9, 1955, he married Opal Eilene McEldowney in Cantril, IA. Read More	Thomas James Allen, 84, of Burlington, died at 9:10 am Saturday, September 10, 2011, at the Great River Medical Center - Klein Center in Burlington. Born May 5, 1927, in Burlington, he was the son of Herbert W. and Rose C. Donahue Allen. On October 9, 1955, he married Opal Eilene McEldowney in Cantril, IA. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving during World War II in Guam. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1947 after returning home from World War II. Jim started out driving a truck with his twin brother Tim for their company Allen Brothers Trucking. He then went to IRC-TRW as a tool and die maker and worked his way up to an engineer until he retired. He then started Allen Air and retired from there and then operated his own gunsmithing business. He was a 50 year member of West Hill United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the VFW Post 10102, and the American Legion 52. Jim was active in the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. He was a Ham radio operator WAOLUD, contacting people in over 100 countries. In 1953 Jim was raised a Master Mason in Des Moines Lodge #1, Burlington, where he later served as Worshipful Master 1997 & 2003. He was also a Past Master of Joppa Lodge #136 in Montrose, IA, as well as being a Life Member of Walpole Tuscan Lodge #630 in Boughton, IL. In 1993 Jim became a member of York Rite in Burlington: Iowa Chapter #1, where he served as High Priest 1995; Zerubbabel Council #22, where he served as Illustrious Master 1996, and received the Ish Sodi award 2000; St. Omer Commandery #15, where he served as Commander 1996-98. He went on to serve as Grand Commander of Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Iowa in 2003. Holder of the KCT award from Grand Encampment KT of the USA. Jim was a member of Charles Clyde Hunt Priory #42 of the Knights of York Cross of Honor, Kilpeck Council #64 of Knight Masons; T.S. Parvin Council #290 & Charter member of Hiram C. Bennett Council #441 - Allied Masonic Degrees; The Royal Order of Scotland; Iowa Research Lodge #2 - Columbia Preceptory #VIII, & Charter member of Burlington Preceptory #XII, Yeomen of York; St. Bartholomew Conclave Red Cross of Constantine; Holy Royal Arch Knight Templar Priests; & 32 degree Scottish Rite, Davenport Valley A&ASR, SJ. He enjoyed learning new technology, gunsmithing, woodworking, genealogy, photography, and metal detecting. Jim was always there to help anyone in need, he was a great service to family, friends and the community. Survivors include his wife, Opal; four daughters, Leslee (Bill) Coons of Bartlett, IL, Cynthia (Avery Andrews) Allen of Canberra, Austrailia, Jacque (Gene) Litton of Troy, MI, and Carloyn "Carrie" Russell of Lenexa, TX; eight grandchildren, Jamey Miller, Christopher Miller, James Allen Andrews, Owen Andrews, Shane Litton, Ava Johnson, Taylor Litton, and Angie Litton; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and one sister. Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM with the family to receive friends following a 5:30 PM public Masonic Memorial Service until 8:00 PM Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home. The funeral service for Mr. Allen will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, September 14, 2011, at West Hill United Methodist Church with Reverend Morris C. Hurd officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.
