Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 4, 2011 at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Watertown with Pastor Tom Christenson officiating. Robbi Bergan will be the soloist accompanied by Mary Wika. Interment will be in the Bergen Cemetery in the spring. Read More	Thomas J. Bergan, Sr., age 93, of Watertown, S.D., passed away on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at Golden Living Center in Watertown. Thomas Jarvis Bergan was born on September 16, 1917 to Torsten and Bertha (Ness) Bergan on a farm near South Shore, S.D. He grew up on the farm where he farmed until 1946. In 1941 he married Lillian Bothun, the mother of his only son. In 1946 they moved to Florence, SD and started a hatchery and produce business which they operated until 1957. Tom moved to Waubay, S.D. in 1958 and was employed by the Northup King Seed Company for the next 22 years. He served on their President's Advisory Council in 1967 and 1970. Tom was also selected as an outstanding citizen in Day County. Tom was very active in public affairs. He served a two year term in the South Dakota State Legislature. He served 20 years on school and church boards, and several terms as president of the Waubay Senior Citizens organization. In 1967 Tom was elected mayor of Waubay, and held that office for seven years. During his terms as mayor, the city in conjunction with the Game Fish and Parks Commission, built the park on the north side of the town. Tom was very instrumental in gaining finances for the project, and in it's design and construction. In the 1960's he served two terms as president of the S.D. Wildlife Federation. Tom married Lorraine Larsen Stockman in 1976 and the couple operated a greenhouse business for many years. Tom was an avid hunter. He shot his first duck at age 8, and his last turkey at age 86. He hunted deer and wild game in the Black Hills for 58 consecutive years. He had resided in Waubay, S.D. from 1958 until 2004, when he moved to Watertown, S.D. In 2005 he had the honor of being the Grand Marshal of Waubay's 125th Anniversary Parade. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Lillian; two sets of twin boys, who died at birth; five brothers and one sister. Tom is survived by his son, Thomas L. Bergan; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; his former wife and best friend, Lorraine and her son, 2 daughters, 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
