Description	:	Thomas Jefferson Goodykoontz was a druggist and stock dealer. Among those who were prominently identified with the business interests of Ogden, Thomas Goodykoontz was born in Anderson, Madison county, Indiana, October 8, 1834. When only five years of age his parents removed to Grant county, where he lived till twenty years of age. He then came to Iowa and located in Allamakee county in 1854, where he made his home until 1865, when he moved to Boone County. Among those who were prominently identified with the business interests of Ogden, Thomas Goodykoontz was born in Anderson, Madison county, Indiana, October 8, 1834. When only five years of age his parents removed to Grant county, where he lived till twenty years of age. He then came to Iowa and located in Allamakee county in 1854, where he made his home until 1865, when he moved to Boone County. He has been engaged in the drug business for twenty-two years, being at the present location since 1875. He received the advantages of a common school education, supplemented with an academic course, and a marked characteristic of Mr. Goodykoontz during his entire career has been his untiring energy and enterprise. He is a man of strong will and determined purpose, he turned the whole current of his life-force into one channel, and as a result has secured that reward and success which must follow persistent honorable effort. He was married in Waukon, Allamakee county, Iowa, to Miss Lucretia M. Bean, October 16, 1860. She is a native of Chicago, and the mother of three sons and three daughters: Jessie L, Carrie M, Mamie J, Eddie J, John and Frank. J. Goodykoontz - Mr. Hollis Stites, His Bedfellow, Also Has a Narrow Escape from the Same Fate. Tons of Sacked Oats Suddenly and Silently Topples Over Upon the Sleepers, Smothering and Crushing the Life Out of One of Them, and Seriously Injuring the Other - Hours of Agony to the Two Unfortunate Men Before Relief Came. "I am just a little afraid those sacks will fall over on you, and you had better sleep in the office." was the warning words of Mr. Ed. Welch, the clerk at Mr. White's feed store, on Monday night as two tired and weary citizens of Plateau prepared to make their couch in the rear end of C. D. White's feed store, just before they turned in for the night. Notwithstanding this warning, Messrs. T. J. Goodykoontz and Hollis Stites looked up at the great stack of oats piled fully twelve feet high, reaching almost to the ceiling, and expressed the belief that it was safe enough; then they calmly laid down - to death. It is the unexpected that happens always. Had they fully realized their danger they would scarcely have taken the risk which they did. But tired and weary with the long journey over a rough mountain road, the men chose to take the risk, rather than move to a place of greater safety. A party of four Plateau citizens and farmers arrived in the city at about 7:30 o'clock Monday evening, with several wagonloads of oats, which they sold to Mr. White, but owning to the lateness of the hour, Mr. White did not care to receive the grain that night, and asked them to come around in the morning. Messrs. W. E. Hawkins and J. M. Cox went to Scovill's free corral, while Messrs. Stites and Goodykoontz asked permission to sleep in the feed store. They had plenty of bedding and this privilege was readily granted them by Mr. White, who also urged them to make their couch in the office by the fire. After visiting one or two stores they went to bed about nine o'clock, and according to Mr. Stites' recollection, were soon fast asleep. Shortly after ten o'clock, Ed. Welch and his companion, Walter Smith, came into the building and also retired. Some time during the night, however, they were awakened by a noise which they attributed to the numerous cats which they kept about the establishment to free it from mice. The noise continued for some time, but they could distinquish no intelligible sound, so like all healthy boys, they dropped off to sleep again. At the break of day Ed. was up, and it was then that he made the awful discovery of what had happened during the night. Hastily summoning help they soon uncovered the unfortunate men. Mr. Goodykoontz was found to be quite dead, while Mr. Stites was almost unconscious, utterly helpless and speechless. Dr. Bull was summoned and had the living man removed to a room over Van Buren's grocery store, where he promptly gave him such treatement as brought life and animation into his stiff and deadened limbs and body and sent the life blood coursing through his veins once more. A thorough examination revealed the fact that no bones had been broken and so far as could be ascertained he had received no internal injuries. It was several hours, however, before he could talk enough to give an intelligent account of the accident. His account of the affair is about as follows: "I think it was about nine o'clock when we went to bed, and we were soon asleep, at least I was, and I suppose Mr. Goodykoontz was also. How long we slept I do not know. The sacks of oats shifted over on us so silently and quickly that we knew nothing of our danger until the awful weight was crushing the life out of us." "I was lying on my side and at first I could move my head a little, but as the sacks of grain began to settle, I could not even do that. It seemed as if I must suffocate. I then thought of Mr. Goodykoontz and began talking to him, but the effort was so great that he could not talk much. He fully realized the situation and said he could not stand it much longer. I heard him mention the names of his wife and children and finally between his dying, gasping breath, he repeated the Lord's prayer. I could hear him better than he could (sic). When he ceased praying I knew that he was dead. "It's awful. I was conscious that I was slowly dying, but called as loudly as I could for help, but with the tons of weight upon me, I could scarsly make a sound. My throat became dry and parched, and by a great effort I managed to get my finger to my mouth and bite off a small piece of flesh so that I could moisten my throat with the blood, so that I could talk and make a noise." "The minutes seemed like hours and days and I thought relief never would come. I felt that I was dying by inches, and it is purely accidental that I am alive today. I am awfully sorry about Mr. Goodykoontz' death." The body of Mr. Goodykoontz was removed to the undertaking establishment of H. C. Bucklin, and Coroner F. R. Smith decided that no inquest was necessary under the circumstances. The deceased was a brother of ex-State Auditor Goodykoontz, and came to this valley from Iowa about two years ago, and at first rented a farm near Fruita, but soon after moved to Plateau valley with his family and leased the C. K. Palmer ranch, and was engaged in feeding beef cattle and general farming. He leaves a family of seven children, five of whom were living with him, and two married daughters in the east. He was 61 years of age and a man of good reputation and esteemed by his neighbors and friends generally. Mr. E. J. Goodykoontz, the eldest son of the dead man, was notified of his father's death, Tuesday, at two o'clock, and arrived in the city Wednesday morning. He accompanied the body back to Iowa Thursday morning, stopping with it at DeBeque (sic) for a day, in order that his brothers and sister might have a farewell look at their dead parent. The children have the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community in their loss. ****** His children include Edgar Jacob, Mary Jane McAllister, Carrie M., John B., and Frank Albon.
