Read More	Source: The Edgewood Journal, Thursday, September 1, 1921, pg. 1 ANOTHER PIONEER CALLED TO REST Thomas Jefferson James passed away at his home in Edgewood, Monday evening, August 29th, aged 82 years, 11 months and 7 days. He suffered from a long illness of eleven months; however he was not confined to his bed only about a week prior to his death. Mr. James was born in Perry county, Ohio, September 22nd, 1839. His parents moved from Ohio to Dubuque county, Iowa when he was four years old, where they remained for a short time, then returned to Ohio. Later they moved to Missouri and from there returned to Dubuque county for a few years, after which they settled in Delaware county near Edgewood. He was married to Miss Rhoda Steele March 13th, 1862. To this union two children were born, a son, Henry E. and a duaghter Nellie M. Blanchard, both of whom reside in Edgewood. Mr. and Mrs. James began housekeeping on a farm about three and one half miles west of Edgewood where he was a thrifty farmer. They remained on this farm fourteen years, then came to Edgewood and embarked in the mercantile business - building a fine two story brick building which was a credit to our town; here they carried on a successful business from 1881 until his store building together with a fine, lareg stock of goods was destroyed by fire in April 1903. Mr. James was a very active man during his earthly life, always busy when his strength would permit. He was a kind, indulgent father, a loving husband, and amicable, accomodating neighbor, a conscientious and honest man in all his dealings, and greatly appreciated every kindness shown him, and was always glad to lend a helping hand to others. During his last illness he talked with the writer about God's presence and Power and expressed regret that he had not known what real Life was, which knowledge would have enabled him to have lived a better life. About the last words he said to his dear ones were, "I don't want to leave you but I must." He had no fear of death. Beside his wife and children he leaves to mourn his loss, one grandchild, Harry E. James, who resides in Canada. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. A.F. Eldredge, Wednesday afternoon, August 31, interment was made in the Edgewood cemetery.
