SLACK DIES IN SHELBURNE Thomas Kerr Slack, a former Progressive member of the Ontario Legislature died suddenly early last Thursday morning in Shelburne District Hospital. In his 82nd year, he had been in failing health for some time. Mr. Slack was born in Melancthon Township, in February of 1875. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Slack, pioneers of the area. He married Margaret Brown, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Brown (Mr. Brown was charter secretary of the Dufferin Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Co. and for many years postmaster at Melancthon). Mrs. Slack died last January. Mr. Slack had been clerk of Melancthon Township for 25 years and a member of the Ontario Legislature for the old Dufferin riding for three terms prior to re-distribution in 1935. The following year he became Sheriff of Dufferin County , a post he held until his retirement in 1944. He had meanwhile moved from his home in Melancthon to Orangeville, where he had been a member of the Rotary Club and the United Church. After the passing of his wife early this year, he moved to Shelburne where he took up residence with his daughter Helen (Mrs. Fred Claridge) First Avenue. Besides his daughter and three grandchildren, Mac, Frederick and Mary Claridge, he is survived he is survived by four sisters; Mrs. Robert Burton (Annie), Mrs. W. E. Skelton (Ida), Mrs. J. J. Lyons (Alice), and Catherine Slack, all of Toronto and one brother, George, of Uxbridge. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon, with the service at the Phoenix & Stevenson Funeral Home, Shelburne, being conducted by his paster, Rev. Ronald Arkwright, of Orangeville. The pallbearers were two nephews, Carmen Burton, Guelph and Emerson Skelton, Sarnia; Messrs. Milton Standbrook and Joseph Egerton, Orangeville, and T. J. O'Flynn and William Oliver, Shelburne. A profusion of beautiful floral tributes testified to the respect and affection in which the deceased was held. Interment was made in Shelburne Cemetery. Friends and relatives attended the funeral from Toronto, Guelph, Sarnia, Alliston, Peterborough, Orangeville, Grimsby, Barrie, Brampton and Birmingham, Michigan. He was born in Melancthon Township, Dufferin County, Ontario, the son of Richard Slack, an immigrant from Ireland. In 1905, he married Margaret Brown. Slack served as clerk for Melancthon township.
