Description	:	Tom Slater, 72, passed away on March 17, 2018, at the Jewish Life Center in Des Moines Iowa, a result of complications from the lifelong condition of Crohn’s disease he managed with great courage and which he did not let interfere with his life. Tom was born in Templeton, Iowa on November 5th, 1945 to Donald and Geraldine Slater and grew up on his family farm there with his four brothers and three sisters. Tom was born in Templeton, Iowa on November 5th, 1945 to Donald and Geraldine Slater and grew up on his family farm there with his four brothers and three sisters. He graduated from Washburn University in 1967 and served as Director of Parks, Recreation and Public Property for Council Bluffs in the 1970’s Tom was elected twice to represent Council Bluffs and Pottawattamie County as state senator (from 1977 through 1984), where he chaired the state government committee and was responsible for much progressive legislation. He was founder and chief executive officer of the State Public Policy Group (SPPG), which, since 1984, has helped nonprofit and other groups be responsive organizations and positive voices in public policy. Tom’s professional legacy is in the staff, colleagues, and friends he has mentored, encouraged and enabled to pursue successful careers promoting the public good. His personal legacy is with his family, countless friends, and lives he has touched with his humor, compassion, and wisdom. Tom is survived by his wife of 28 years, Valentina Fominykh, his daughter Angie Slater (James Penney), stepson, Vladimir Fominykh (Victoria Fominykh) and grandchildren Jacqui McCloud, Devon Garrett and Thomas Slater all of Omaha NE, step grandchildren , Veronica and Nikita Fominykh of Moscow, Russia, and a great-grandson Myles McCloud as well as siblings, David (Sue Ann) Slater of Omaha NE, Joseph Slater (Sue Cooper) of Bakersfield CA, Steven (Shari) Slater of Papillion NE, Roger (Diane Halbur) of Glidden IA, Peggy (Tom) Buman of Carroll, IA, Susan (Dan) Badding of Panora, IA Melissa (Bradley) Barks of St Louis MO, As well as many nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Geraldine (Trecker) Slater of Templeton, Iowa and mother-in-law Vera Sotnichenko of Moscow, Russia. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 20 at Westover Funeral Home at 6337 Hickman in Des Moines Iowa between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on March 20. A Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m. The funeral service will be at Holy Trinity Catholic Church at 2926 Beaver Ave in Des Moines Iowa at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 21. A graveside service will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Templeton, Iowa at approximately 4:30 p.m. in Templeton, Iowa that same day. In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be directed to Children and Families of Iowa, the Food Bank of Iowa or The Scholarship Fund for the Grandchild of Thomas L. Slater.
