Description	:	Thomas Leroy Burgess, 80, of Glendale, SC, died Sunday, November 25, 2007, at Beverly Living Center in Hendersonville, NC. Born October 30, 1927, in Glendale, he was the son of the late Luther Victor Burgess and Nellie Mae (Blackwell) Burgess and the husband of the late Geraldine (Bell) Burgess. Read More	Thomas Leroy Burgess, 80, of Glendale, SC, died Sunday, November 25, 2007, at Beverly Living Center in Hendersonville, NC. Born October 30, 1927, in Glendale, he was the son of the late Luther Victor Burgess and Nellie Mae (Blackwell) Burgess and the husband of the late Geraldine (Bell) Burgess. He was a retired Spartanburg County Sheriff's Deputy, serving under three sheriffs (B. B. Brockman, Larry Smith, and Bill Coffey). He was also a retired brick mason, former volunteer fireman for the Glendale Fire Department, former head of security at the School for the Deaf and Blind and at Mettler-Toledo for American Security, life member of Glendale Masonic Lodge #271, Past patron of the Glendale OES #175, and of the Pentecostal faith. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, serving on the USS Douglas L. Howard in the Pacific Theatre, Naval Reserve. Survivors include three daughters, Gayle Taylor-Decker and her husband Rick of Glendale, Kathryn Coates and her husband Terry of Spartanburg, and Lisa Martin and her husband Eddie of Conway; a sister, Margaret Worley of Boiling Springs; a brother, James H. Burgess of Glendale; a special friend, Annette Erwin of Pacolet; eight grandchildren; and twenty-one great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Visitation was 7:00-9:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 27, 2007, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 28, 2007, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel conducted by the Rev. Richard Worley. Burial with Masonic rites was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Tracy Taylor, Jeremy Taylor, Scott Tessnear, Keith Tessnear, Galen Mabry, and James Lazurick. Howard in the Pacific Theatre. He was also a member of the Naval Reserve. He was a member of the Glendale Volunteer Fire Department. He was with the Spartanburg County Police Department for a total of 18 years, having served under Sheriffs B.B. Brockman, Larry Smith, and Bill Coffey. After leaving the police department, he became head of security at the School for the Deaf and Blind and at Metler-Toledo for American Security.
