He was reportedly, by one account, the first person buried in this cemetery. However, Ken Leonard shared this information: "It is a common myth that Thomas Nickels was the first person buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. It is sometimes said he was the first adult buried there. Mr. Leonard also provided this information: "According to "Shawnee County Cemeteries, Vol. IV" published by the Topeka Genealogical Society in 1993, the first recorded burial at Pleasant Hill was in May 1855 but they don't name the deceased. They also included the text of the incorporation papers for the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Association dated April 7, 1877. One of the signors was Thomas Nickels who died just one week later. I think the source of the story must be that Thomas Nickels was the first person buried after the cemetery was officially organized. FYI, the other signors were A.A. Disney, William A. Zirkle, Silas Zirkle, J. G. Zirkle, H.M. Zirkle and William Leonard."
