He received his primary and secondary education at Braintree and became a Hatter, by trade. He received his primary and secondary education at Braintree and became a Hatter, by trade. In early life, he established himself in Hingham, MA., setting up a shop about 1794, and was married there to Lydia Hersey in 1795. He was Post Master in Hingham for many years, holding the office under Presidents Madison, Monroe, John Q. Adams, Jackson, and part of Van Buren's administration during the years 1809 through 1839. Thomas Loud's house, which was also the Post Office, was still standing in Hingham Center in 1978 when the author was there doing research. It is located on the main road through Hingham within the same block and across the street from the current (1978) Post Office. This old building, which is next to the creek, was Thomas Loud's house. From 1794 to about 1815, he had a Hatter's Shop there in the front part, and about 1809, he was Post Master, as well. The picture of Thomas Loud was in the collection that Dr. Watson Loud had accumulated. It was an engraving of Thomas Loud, about 1854, when he was about 84 years old. It was engraved by A. H. Ritchie. Thomas was an excellent man, industrious in his vocation, and prudent and economical in his habits. He was a Director of the Hingham Bank until near the close of his life. He and his wife, Lydia Hersey, attended the Old Ship Church of Hingham and they are buried at the top of the hill in the cemetery, a short way from the Church. There is a stone marking his grave that gives his birth as Nov. 4, 1769, but his son wrote that he was born Oct. 4, 1769. The manager and caretaker of that cemetery for many years was Ray Blenis, who married Priscilla Blanchard. She is a first cousin to the author of this book. Hingham is a beautiful town and it must have been even more beautiful in 1795, when Thomas Loud was married there. He was a grandson of Francis and Onner (Prince) Loud.
