Read More	Pioneer of the Earling District Passes Thomas Oscar Bratrud was born at Kensett, Iowa, on May 16, 1882. At an early age he moved tot he Chamberlain district in South Dakota. In 1902 he immigrated to Alberta with his parents, and was one of the first settlers who homesteaded in the Earling district. His was the first dwelling of logs and sod and served as a home, church and later as a school house. Mr. Bratrud married Carrie Ritland at Holden on December 22, 1915, and following their marriage they settled in the Palmer district, where they resided until 1952, when the retired to living in Camrose. While their family was growing up, the Bratrud home was open house for the young people in the community. They had two daughters, Constance and Thelma, and two sons, Harold and Clayton. A lover of horses and an excellent horseman, Mr. Bratrud raised pedigreed Percherons for many years. He was interested in community projects and organizations. He was a charter member of the Zion Lutheran Church, which he helped to build. This interest in Zion congregation extended to several times being a delegate to the District Convention. After moving to Camrose, he was trustee of the Messiah Lutheran Church for eight years. In his community interests, Thomas Bratrud was Councillor for the municipality for several years, also a member of the Palmer School Board. At Camrose, he was extremely active in the Camrose Arts and Crafts Society, and instrumental in promoting the high standards of excellence accredited to the Society. "Uncle Tom", as he was popularly known to a host of relatives as well as friends, passed away quietly at his home in the early hours of Friday, July 6th, at the age of 80 years. He leaves to mourn his passing: his loving wife; two daughters, Constance (Mrs. Jack Tough) of Seattle, Wash., and Thelma (Mrs. Emil Dorin) of Innisfail, Alta.; Harold with the RCAF at Portage La Prairie, Man. and Clayton of Smith Falls, Ont.; nine grandchildren, and two brothers, Orvil of Ryley and John of Red Deer, as well as many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were held in the Messiah Lutheran Church on Monday, July 9th, at 2:00 p.m., Rev. O.H. Haugen officiating. Interment followed in the Camrose cemetery.
