Sumner, Ia. - Navy Bomber Pilot Thomas Oelberg of Sumner, credited with sinking a nazi submarine with four bombs in four minutes on May 27, has been killed in an accidental crash, according to a navy department message to his wife, residing with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Mirs in Leroy township. The crash presumably occurred somewhere in the Atlantic, where Pilot Oelberg had been on patrol duty when the family last had word from him. The sinking of the submarine, for which Oelberg got national recognition this spring, was off the coast of Martinique. Upon his return to an Altantic base from the patrol on which his plane bagged the submarine he received a message telling him of the birth of his daughter, Carol Ann Oelberg, in a Waverly hospital. The child is with her mother at the Mirs home. Oelberg once a farmer near Fayette, had been in the navy for seven years. He and Mrs. Oelberg were married while he was in flight training at Pensacola, Fla. A second message said the flier's body had not been recovered. If it is, burial will take place near the crash scene, the message said. (Waterloo Sunday Courier, Waterloo, IA, Sunday, July 19, 1942, p. 6, Col. 1, *date omitted for privacy) Thomas Oelberg SUMNER (Special) - Full military rites were held Sunday, May 8 at 1:15 at the Legion hall, Sumner, for Thomas Oelberg, aviation pilot first class, who was killed July 12, 1942 in Trinidad. Father William P. Mullen of Fayette Legion Post officiated and burial was beside his parents in Lima cemetery. Colors and color guards from Sumner Legion and V.F.W. were present as well as the Fayette Legion. The body had been temporarily buried in Fort Reed British National Cemetery. Pilot Oelberg was born Jan. 4, 1913 at Fayette and was graduated from Fayette high school in 1931. Nov. 11, 1935 he enlisted in the Navy at San Diego and served at Coco Solo, Panama, Norfolk, Va., Gould Island, Rhode Island, Alaska, Pensacola, Fla., and San Juan, Puerto Rico. He is survived by his wife, the former Ruth Mirs, a daughter, Carol Ann, two brothers and two sisters. Pall bearers were classmates and cousins, Aulden, Charles and Paul Oelberg, Howard Johnson, Raymond Thomas and Harold Earle, all of Fayette.
