Thomas, the brother of Adam Ritchey -- first white settler in Washington Co., IA -- died in a runaway accident while hauling barrels with his team of horses from Brighton, Washington Co., IA, to the town of Washington. He built the original southeast corner of the historic Conger House in Washington, where he and his family made their home.
