| Description | : | Thomas was the 3rd of eight children born to Peter Ruark and Jane Herrin, both originally from Kentucky. His siblings: Elizabeth, Andrew, John M, Peter, Sarah J, William and Mary. His father moved the family to Wayne County, Iowa in 1851 (source: 1856 Iowa CR) where Tom became acquainted with the Messenger family and that's how he met his wife. On July 24, 1853, Tom married Mary Adelia, the daughter of Frederick Dent Messenger and Jane Marie Johnson, in Wayne County.
