Union Star, Mar. 14 Thomas Saint's name is on this grave marker, but he also has a grave marker in Lot 65. I believe that his daughter, Guilema Saint Beem is buried in Lot 66, which was ment for burial of Thomas's wife, Mary Ann Albertson Saint . When she died, she was buried in Lot 100 and Thomas' name was added to the grave marker. In the 1862 Union draft, the states were required to fill a quota of volunteers and intuitive a draft, if they didn't fulfill the quota. In IN the Adjutant General of the state did not have the correct numbers of volunteers and instituted a draft. Since it was the state's responsibility to enforce the draft, they set a commutation fee of $200 for conscientious objectors for the various religious groups that had objections to fighting in war--Quakers, Amish, Mennonites, and probably a few others. Conscious objectors, and other could also hire a substitute. The Salem Democrat Banner Liberty newspaper that had a supplementary list of Quakers from Washington Co., IN that opted to pay the $200 commutation fee. The list included Thomas Saint and his son, Nathan, along with several members of the Trueblood family. he Saint and The Saint and Trueblood families migration from NC to IN in 1812. When the IN Adjutant General realized that the state had reached its quota of volunteers before the draft was instituted, he refunded the commutation fees that conscious objectors had paid. It's not clear if Thomas and Nathan actually paid the fee and received a refund.
