Mr. Slater was so badly injured that he died while being taken to the hospital. There are four tracks at the crossing, where a watchman is employed to protect pedestrians and teams. Mr. Slater, who was hard of hearing, started across the tracks and had reached the fourth track when train No. 17, westbound, suddenly appeared and struck him, throwing his body to one side. It is thought that owing to his deafness Mr. Slater was unable to hear the approach of the train. The watchman at the crossing was unable to save him from death. Mr. Slater was a member of a family which has lived in Allegheny and Washington counties for upwards of 100 years. He was born in 1819, near Noblestown, and had spent most of his life farming in Mt. Pleasant and Cecil townships. He amassed a considerable fortune and retired in 1896, It was the custom of Mr. Slater to make daily calls on his daughter, Mrs. William Essler, a resident of Franklin avenue, Wilkinsburg, to make which journey he was obliged to cross the railroad. The deceased is survived by nine children: Mrs. S. G. Sackett of Denver, Col.; Mrs. William Essler of Wilkinsburg; Mrs. F. J. McClelland of Kansas; Mrs. S. A. S. Metheny of Philadelphia, and Miss Emma C. Slater of Wilkinsburg; Dr. G. W. Slater of Baltimore, Rev. T. M. Slater of Seattle, Wash.; Prof. William T. Slater of Wilkinsburg, and J. R. Slater, who resides on the home farm in Cecil township. The funeral of Mr. Slater will be held at his late residence, 426 Kelly avenue, Wilkinsburg, this evening at 8 o'clock. The body will be brought to Canonsburg on the train reaching here at 10:44 Tuesday, and will be interred in the cemetery at Millers Run Reformed Presbyterian church.
