They had eight children: Mary Annette, Thomas Conrad, Evealie, Patricia Jane, twins Kerry Coke and Sherry Alla, William Ralph, and Thomas Spain (Tommy), III. LAKELAND FL - Thomas "Tom" S. Painter, Jr., SMSgt. USAF Ret., 92, a former resident of Simpsonville and Ninety Six, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on September 3, 2012, due to injuries sustained after being struck by a pickup truck in a Wal-Mart parking lot. Born May 6, 1920, in Union SC to Thomas S. Painter, Sr. and Ruth Herring, he was the third of four children and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Mr. Painter joined the US Army in 1941 serving in the Philippines during WWII. After the war, he transferred to the US Air Force and retired on September 1, 1962, from the Eighth Air Force, SAC, Headquarters, Westover AFB, in Chicopee Falls MA, after 21 years of service. His positions included Supply Officer and Air Crew Protection Superintendent. Special assignments included England and New Zealand from where he made two trips to the South Pole. An avid golfer, Mr. Painter played on several Air Force Golf teams during his years in the service. After many years of living in Simpsonville, Tom and his wife, Ruth, returned to their childhood home of Ninety Six in 1990, where he was active with his garden, Star Fort Golf Club and Cambridge United Methodist Church. In 2007, the Painters moved to Toccoa GA, where they lived with their daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Dr. Joseph Kilpatrick. After several years the Painters and Kilpatricks moved to Lakeland FL, where he made many friends at the McDonald's coffee club and among the walkers at the mall. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. A beloved husband, father, and friend, he is survived by his wife, Mary Ruth(Turner); four sons, Conrad, Kerry, Ralph and Tom; four daughters, Mary Ann (Kilpatrick), Evealie (Reeves), Jane (Joneson), and Sherry (Dunn); and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews. Burial in the Elmwood Cemetery in Ninety Six with full military honors. Blyth Funeral Home.
