THOMAS SAMS DIES AT MONROE CITY Funeral services for Thomas Vincent Sams were held at Barkelew & Davis Funeral Home in Shelbina, Friday afternoon, Feb. 24, at 2 o'clock. The services were in charge of his nephew, the Rev. Floyd Sams, pastor of Riverview Garden Baptist church, St. Louis. Interment was in Shelbyville cemetery Mr. Sams passed away at his home two miles west of Monroe City, Wednesday morning, Feb. 22 at 6:15. He had been in ill health for five years and critically ill for the last four months. A son of Joseph and Catherine Day Sams, he was born in Marion county, Dec. 6 (sic),1885. For several years he worked in a drug store and the post office at Warren, later moving to Philadelphia where he owned and operated a grocery and dry goods store. He was first married to Miss Ruby E. Cort, who passed away Nov. 22, 1919. On Nov. 10, 1921 he was united in marriage to Kathryn M. McKethen, who survives. They resided at Philadelphia for several years prior to moving to Shelbyville. In 1942 the family moved to a farm northeast of Shelbyville and in 1951 to the home near Monroe City. He was a member of the Baptist church. Surviving besides the widow are a son-in-law and daughter, Mr .and Mrs. Robert Maddox: four grandchildren, Bruce. David, Mark and Kathy Madge Maddox, of Shelbina; a brother, Luther Sams of Philadelphia; two nephews. Rev. Floyd Sams of St. Louis, Drexel Sams of Albuquerque, N. M.; two nieces, Mrs. Al Ratz of Jefferson City and Mrs. Otis Crook of Emden. He was preceded by two brothers, Vernon, who died at the age of 13 years and Vaden, a former deputy county clerk of Marion county.
