Description	:	The son of Henry Edmund Day and Abigail P. Gilley. On his Civil War pension application documents, Thomas gives his birth year variously as 1843, 1844, and 1845. This caused some difficulty with his claim and he eventually stated that 1843 was the correct year of birth. A private and farrier in the Civil War, Thomas enlisted in Company D, 1st Maine Cavalry on 1 September 1861 at Orland, Maine. This caused some difficulty with his claim and he eventually stated that 1843 was the correct year of birth. A private and farrier in the Civil War, Thomas enlisted in Company D, 1st Maine Cavalry on 1 September 1861 at Orland, Maine. Along with his company, he was mustered into federal service on 19 October 1861. He was mustered out of service at Petersburg, VA 1 August 1865 to date from 25 November 1864. While he is not listed in Maine at Gettysburg as participating at the battle, he was present, but had been detached as an aide to General Philip Sheridan. Over the years, he made his livelihood as a mariner, teamster, and farmer. Married on 19 November 1869 to Amy Alice Champlin at the Montville (CT) Baptist Church. Following the death of his first wife, he married Emily Irons Gillan, the widow of David W. Gillan and mother of his business partner, Walter Gillan. They were married circa 1907. His granddaughter Ruth Day Tillinghast, who was born December 22, 1891, lived with him from the time she was a young girl until her marriage in 1907.
