The life history of Thomas Reese, well known and highly respected citizen of Taylor township, Marshall county, is one of varied interest and it might be held up as an object lesson to the youth of the land whose fortunes are matters for future years to determine, for it shows what one may accomplish through the proper exercise of the qualities that win, if he happens to be so gifted by mother nature—grit, pluck, good judgment and honesty of purpose—as they have evidently been by the gentleman of whom these paragraphs deal. Mr. Reese, whose days are now in the "yellow leaf," is yet active, hale and hearty, for he has been careful of his habits all through life. He comes to us from "ye merrie isle" of England, having been born there on January 17, 1837. He is the son of Edward and Fannie (Cole) Reese, both natives of England, from which country they emigrated to New York in 1848, when Thomas was nine years of age. They came to Illinois and landed in the city of Chicago. The same year they located in Dupage county, and there the wife and mother passed to her rest in 1887, the father having preceded her to the grave at the same place in 1885. Their family consisted of six children, five of whom are living. Edward Reese was a farmer and a Republican in politics. He belonged to the Church of England. Thomas Reese spent his boyhood on a farm and he has made agriculture his life work. He received a good education in the public schools of Illinois, and he came to Grundy county, Iowa, in 1880. After remaining there eleven years he came to Marshall county. He has been very successful in a business way, and as he has prospered, by reason of good management and honest dealing with his fellow men, he has bought land, until he now owns an aggregate of five hundred and twenty acres, lying in Marshall and Grundy counties and in the northern part of the state. He keeps his home place under excellent improvements, has a beautiful home and handles a fine grade of live stock. He is one of the substantial and inﬂuential men of his community. He and his family are members of the Presbyterian church.. Mr. Reese was married in March, 1861, to Elizabeth Colley, a native of Illinois, and to this union five children have been born, one only surviving at this writing. The wife and mother died December 5, 1876, and the father was married on December 17, 1881, to Villa Ford, who was born in Boone county, Illinois, January 24, 1862. She is the daughter of John and Louise (Frace) Ford, natives of Pennsylvania. There they grew to maturity, were educated and married, and early in their married life came to Chicago where he is now living, the wife being deceased. They were the parents of five children, three of whom are living. Mr. Ford was a farmer. He was a Republican in politics and a member of the Congregational church. Six children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Reese, all living, namely: Iva, Ida, Henrietta, Warren, Ethel and Eva. Provided by Robert Fahey
